Powder falls from a hopper 12 through grid 24 on to glass sheet 14 carried by rollerway 16 to form a thin protective layer thereupon. The powder is brushed through grid 24 by the longitudinal reciprocating movement of brush 66 carried by element 58 to move in guide 62 and likewise the powder is agitated by the longitudinal reciprocating movement of comb 72 carried by element 70 moving in guide 74. Brush 66 and comb 72 are vibrated in opposite directions by an eccentric not shown. Grid 24 can be adjusted horizontally by screw 36 and vertically by nut 46. Part of the grid 24 may be screened by movable screen 52. The frequency of brush and comb may be varied by varying the frequency of the eccentric. Element 76 which carries agitating comb 72 may be adjusted inside the hopper.
