Rack-and-pinion steering mechanism for a motor vehicle comprises a rod 8 adapted at its ends 9, 10 for fixing to the chassis or body of a vehicle, a casing 2 slidable on the rod 8, a toothed rack 1 carried by the casing 2, ball-joints 3, 4 for connecting tie rods 5a to the rack 1, and a pinion 11 meshing with the rack 1 and adapted to be rotated by a steering column 26 to cause longitudinal movement of the rack 1 and casing 2 relative to the rod 8. The pinion 11 is mounted in a housing 12 adapted to be fixedly secured to the chassis or body 13. A cylindrical part 20 of the casing 2 forms a fluid-pressure cylinder divided by a piston 19 on the rod 8 into two chambers supplied with pressure fluid through the interior of the rod 8 from a control valve 25 including an axiallydisplaceable or rotary spool. |
