A method for the underwater connection of two pipe-lines 5, 23, using manipulating and joining apparatus 24, comprises marking the location of the free end of the pipe-line 5, pulling the pipe-line 23 adjacent to the location, attaching the pipe-line 23 in a predetermined, fixed position on the manipulating and joining apparatus 24, lowering the apparatus 24 to the free end of the pipe-line 5 so that the pipe-line 23 overlaps the pipe-line 5, cutting-off the overlapped portion of one of the pipe-lines, so that the ends of the pipe-lines lie in the same vertical plane, and coaxially aligning and joining the ends. The pipe-line 5 extends from a well 2 and the location of its free end is marked by a buoy (8) attached to a guide line 7 attached to the free end by means of a plug (7a), Fig. 5 (not shown), sent down the pipe-line 5 to the free end. A pipe-lay barge 22 pulls the pipe-line 23, extending from a gathering station 9 or a production system, to the buoy 8. The pipeline 23 is affixed to the manipulating and joining apparatus 24 and the apparatus 24 is lowered down the guide line 7 by means of control lines 28, 29, to the pipe-line 5. The overlapped portion of the pipe-line 5, including the plug (7a), is cut off and the pipe-lines 5, 23 are joined by the apparatus 24 by means of arc, gas or resistance butt-welding, the operations being remote controlled from the barge 22. Alternatively the overlapped portion of the pipe-line 23 is cut off above the surface of the water after television cameras in the apparatus 24 have recorded the amount of overlap of the pipe-lines 5, 23. |
