A loading means for a fork lift truck or stacking crane for handling and transporting goods on pallets, comprises a vertically movable carriage 16, 17, and a pair of lifting fork arms 15 telescopically displaceable horizontally and laterally in relation to the direction of travel of the loading means, the fork arms including loadlifting members 31 vertically movable in relation to the carriage. Each of the arms 15 includes one part 21 secured to the carriage and two parts 22, 23 telescopically mounted thereon, the outer part 22 being movable relative to the carriage by a pair of fluid pressure rams 26, one operating to extend and one to retract the arm. The inner part 23 of each arm is moved at twice the velocity of the outer part 22 by a tape 27 attached to the part 23 and to the carriage passing around a roller at the appropriate end of the outer part 22. The lifting members 31 extending the length of the inner arm parts 23, are each flexibly mounted on a pair of independently supplied pressure fluid rams 32, one of which is flexibly mounted on the part 23. The fork arms may be extended to either side of the carriage 16, 17. |
