A transfer mechanism for transferring workpieces between workstations at which machining or assembly operations are carried out comprises a transfer arm pivoted.at one end about a first axis and pivotally and slidably connected to transfer bar means which are longitudinally reciprocable in a direction normal to the first axis, multi-speed rotatable drive means interconnected with the transfer arm by crank means whereby the transfer bar means is reciprocable at a relatively high rate initially and thereafter more slowly to transfer workpieces smoothly arid position them accurately at the end of each movement in the longitudinal direction. A work supporting pallet 27, Fig. 1, is mounted on rails 23, 25 for sliding transfer movement under the control of a reciprocable transfer bar 29. The bar 29,is oscillatable about its own axis under the control of an hydraulic motor 53 and transverse slide 61 to bring;driving dogs 45 on the transfer bar 29 into and out of driving engagement with the pallet 27. Longitudinal movement of the bar 29 in suitably timed relation with the oscillation thereof is effected by means of a reversible two speed drive motor 85, Fig. 4, which operates through a crank 117 and pivoted transfer arm 127 to reciprocate a drive block 83 mounted on the transfer bar 29. Movement of the crank 117 is limited to 180 degrees by limit switches 176, 192 engaged by members mounted on the transfer arm 127, the major portion of this movement being effected with the motor 85 running at high speed; the final portion of the movement is determined by switches 177 or 178 operated by cam members 171 or 185 mounted on the crank 117 and is at low speed. The effect of the speed switching and of the simple harmonic motion derived from the crank is to provide optimum acceleration and deceleration -and accurate positioning of the workpiece and pallet during transfer from one station to the next. The pivot mounting 129, 132 of the transfer arm is adjustable in position in two directions to provide adjustment of the stroke and end points of the movement of the transfer bar. In a modified form of the invention (Figs. 11-15, not shown) there are two transfer arms interconnected in such manner by a pivotal link that one arm, which is operated directly by the crank, performs a movement twice the magnitude of that of the other. In this embodiment the transfer bars are raised and lowered selectively by hydraulic rams to bring them into and out of their operative position for transferring pallets. The second transfer arm and its associated transfer bars transfers pallets singly once each cycle through one station while the first operates once each alternate cycle to transfor pairs of pallets through the distance of two stations. |
