An aqueous solution, e.g. of sulphuric .acid, is concentrated by introducing a stream of hot combustion .gases .below the surface of the solution using an immersion heater wherein the combustion tube 4 and chamber 5 are surrounded by, but spaced apart from, chernically-resistant casing 11 which has an open lower end, and an inert gas (e.g. air) is supplied through distributing head 9 into the gap 10 between the jacket 6 and the casing 11, whereby the casing is thermally insulated. The casing may be made of iron-silicon alloy. Coal gas (or coke oven gas) and air are supplied to mixer head 3 through pipes 1 and 2, and combustion takes place in tube 4 and chamber 5. Jacket 6 may .be made of cast iron, and is separated from the tube 4 and chamber 5 by insulating material and refractory layer 8, respectively. |
