An electron beam gun for heating metal strip or vaporizing molten metal comprises a support 14, terminals 18 mounted on the support, an emitter wire 19 between the terminals and, mounted on the support between the wire and the support, a trough-shaped backing electrode or shield 21, the sides of which are pinched in adjacent the mid-point of the wire. An accelerating sheet electrode 12 with an opening conforming with the electrode extends above the electrode. Several guns may be assembled end-to-end. |
