Residual leuco bases and the bleach products of azo dyes are removed from silver halide materials by either (1) treatment, after silver-dye bleaching, with an aqueous solution containing either (a) an N-vinylpyrrolidone polymer, (b) an ether of formula: R-(X) m -O(CH 2 CH 2 O) n H (in which R is alkyl, X is p-phenylene, m is O or 1 and n is an integer), (c) octadecylpyridinium bromide, or (d) tridecylmethylammonium bromide, or (2) incorporating one of (a) to (d) in at least one of the layers of the material, so that the base or product is removed during silver-dye bleaching or subsequent water washing. The aqueous solution used preferably also contains Na 2 SO 4 and Na 2 SO 3 . |
