Filter elements and filter vessels in disc-type settling filters may be cleaned and disinfected by spraying with jets of water and steam or disinfectant to which simultaneous longitudinal and rotary oscillations are imparted. Apparatus described comprises a spray pipe 2 and a double acting piston 6 with a piston rod 13 whichis rigidly connected to a guide bushing 14 provided with a helical groove 15 and secured by a key 16 so that it cannot rotate, the spray pipe being mounted so that it can slide in the bushing and having a radial pin 18 extending through the helical groove 15 and a Z-shaped groove of a fixed guide sleeve 21 surrounding the guide bushing, whereby longitudinal motion of the piston and piston rod is converted to simultaneous longitudinal and rotary oscillations of the pipe. Limit switches 4 and 5 carried by the key inact with control apparatus to reverse the action of the piston.
