A sulfonated alpha -olefin reaction product containing less than about 8% by weight of DELTA '-alkenesulfonate, based on the total amount of alkenesulfonates in the reaction product, is prepared by (1) sulfonating alpha -olefin, (2) allowing the product to step (1) to stand at 20 DEG to 100 DEG C for 1 to 5 hours under anhydrous conditions, (3) neutralizing the product of step (2), and (4) subjecting the product of step (3) to a temperature of 130 DEG to 180 DEG C for from 5 minutes to 2 hours. |
