1301941 Ceramic metal seals P R MALLORY & CO Inc 7 Jan 1970 [8 Jan 1969] 841/70 Heading B3V [Also in Division C1] A hermetic seal for closing the open end of a container 52 housing an electronic component 51 comprises a glass or ceramic apertured member 14, a metal plate 12 sealed to and closing one end of the aperture of the member 14, and an elongated strip 13 of metal one end of which is attached to the metal plate 12 and the other end of which projects outwardly through the aperture of member 14. Preferably the open end of member 14 is sealed to an apertured metal member 16 which is then soldered as at 59 to the container 52. Alternatively, a metal coating may be used. Materials suggested are the following metals, alloys thereof or clad with metal: copper, silver, gold, nickel, palladium, platinum, tantalium, niobrium, aluminium, titanium, zirconium, steels, iron-nickel or iron-chromium alloys and the ceramic may be alumina, steatite, fosterite or beryllia. To give matched seals, the ceramic may be metallized, preferably with silver, but copper, gold, platinum, iron cobalt and nickel are also suggested, and/or the metal may be flashed. In an example, steatite is successively molybdenum-iron and nickel coated, a Fe-Ni-Co alloy is copper flashed and a piece of silver is placed between the two materials and the whole fired at 1000C. The seals are formed by heating the parts together, preferably either under pressure or with an applied potential across the parts. A multiple seal may be provided with a plurality of metal electrodes 13 extending through a plurality of apertures in the ceramic member. A further lead 33 may be welded to the outside of the metal plate 12. |
