Cracking catalysts comprising shaped bodies of SiO 2 -Al 2 O 3 containing zeolites are made by (a) mixing a silica source with a source of alumina to form SiO 2 -Al 2 O 3 (b) mixing with the SiO 2 Al 2 O 3 from 0.5 to 5% of a slurry containing zeolitic nucleation centres having a particle size in the range 0.01 to 0.05 microns (c) forming the resultant mixture to shaped bodies (d) converting a portion of the SiO 2 - Al 2 O 3 to zeolites by heating the shaped bodies in an alkali metal hydroxide solution for about 1 to 10 hours and (e) filtering, washing and drying the product. In an example the dried product had a surface area of 208 m<SP>2</SP>/gm and X-ray examination revealed a 10% faujasite content. |
