Alkali cellulose is treated with gaseous methyl chloride several times by recycling it through the equipment. The methyl chloride is humid with rel. humidity 20 to 50%. Treatment is effected at 80-100 degrees C under pressure of 0.1 to 6 ats. super pressure. Owing to treatment at relatively low pressure, the product has high solubility in water.
