In a mechanical plating process using e.g. glass balls as an impact medium in water, a water insoluble aromatic organic compound is added to the water. The plating metal may be zinc, copper, brass, tin or cadmium. Examples of articles plated are spring wise clamps or nails each of which may first be given a thin copper plating. The organic compound may be aromatic ethers, esters, alcohols, aldehydes and ketones or substituted benzenes. Specific compounds are:- methylphenyl ether, methylene ether of allyldioxybenzene, anisic aldehyde, piperonyl aldehyde, paramethoxy acetophenone, methyl phenyl ketone, propiophenone, methoxy propiophenone, dimethyl acetophenone, or 2-ethoxyethyl p-methoxy cinnamate. |
