The cathode of a solid state electric cell has as active material an organic ammonium polyiodide QI n wherein Q is an organic ammonium cation and n is 2-11. Q is a univalent organic ammonium cation with an ionic volume of 30-85 Š<SP>3</SP> and is an acyclic quaternary ammonium cation when the substituents on the nitrogen atom are aliphatic or aralkyl groups. Examples describe cells with the structure shown in Fig. 2, anode 5 being a blend of Ag, C and RbAg 4 I 5 , electrolyte, electrolyte 6 being RbAg 4 I 5 or C 5 H 5 NHAg 7 I 8 and cathode composition 7 being C + RbAg 4 I 5 + QI n many active materials QI n being exemplified, e.g. (CH 3 ) 4 NI 3 and (C 2 H 5 ) 4 NI 3 . Current is collected by layers 4 and 8. Extension of the electrolyte layer 6 around the cathodic layer 7 prevents short circuiting and loss of iodine. |
