[Also in Divisions A5 and D1] Novel compounds of the general formula wherein R is a C 8-18 alkyl radical, R 3 is a C 1-3 saturated alkyl radical, R 4 is a C 1-3 saturated alkyl radical or a benzyl radical and X is an anion such that the salt is water-soluble, are prepared by reacting an alcohol or mixed alcohols with acrylonitrle to give an alkoxypropionitrile which is hydrogenated to a di-(alkoxypropyl)-amine and then quaternized by reaction with methyl chloride. The two R radicals may both be octyl or preferably a 60% C 8-40% C 10 mixture. R 3 and R 4 are preferably methyl groups and X preferably chloride. Amongst the examples [(C 10 H 21 O(CH 2 ) 3 ) 2 N(CH 3 ) 2 ]<SP>+</SP>Ce- and [80%C 8 H 17 -20% C 10 H 21 O(CH 2 ) 3 ] 2 N(CH 3 ) 2 <SP>+</SP>Ceare specified. |
