[Also in Division C5] 2-Bornane alkyl ketones are prepared by treating camphor with an alkylidene triphenylphosphorane to form a 2-alkylidenebornane followed by reaction with diborane and then an oxidizing agent. Alkylidene triphenylphosphoranes can be prepared by reacting dry dimethylsulphoxide with a strong base to form a methylsulphinyl carbanion followed by reaction with an alkyl triphenylphosphorane halide. Instead of diborane itself LiAlH 4 may be added to a solution of the 2-alkylidenebornane in BF 3 etherate. |
