1346571 Centrifugal pumps HOOVER Ltd 19 April 1971 [5 March 1970] 10667/70 Heading F1C [Also in Division F2] To prevent blockage of a centrifugal pump for a washing machine by foreign objects, the axially extending inlet bore 23, Fig.6, decreases in cross-sectional area from a plane 24 to a plane 25A, and three equally spaced ribs 25 are provided. Each rib protudes at 33 from the bore 23 and tapers radially inwardly to a generally axially extending tip 27 having a curved end 30 followed by a sloping portion 29 which is substantially parallel to the wall of the bore and a substantially axially extending portion 28. The tangential outlet 41 is at least as large as the smallest part of the inlet in order to allow any foreign objects reaching the pump interior to be discharged. The inlet hose 13, Fig. 11, has a sump 56 immediately preceding the pump inlet. The projections 33 tend to decelerate or deflect foreign objects as they approach the inlet so that they drop into the sump 56. A removable bung 57 permits such objects to be removed during servicing. The outlet hose may also have such a sump.
