A rotary hearth furnace for the heating of billets etc. incorporates a cylindrical hearth which is part of a partially hollow rotor filled with air which floats on a fluid, which is contained in a socket tank. - Prefd. the hearth is located round a central socked through which also runs the driven shaft. The fluid is also used for sealant between hearth and furnace shell. Suitable fluids are water, oil or any material giving off combustible vapours. - Floating of the hearth eliminates the need for costly mechanical supports for the hearth and the charge, or for a cumbersome rotating furnace shell.
