Polyurethane foam cylinders are cut across their axis to take an inserted sugar beet seed which grows easily despite heavy top soil. The top of the cylinder projects a few millimetres above the ground. The cylinder end should be tipped for eady ground penetration and can have a protective coating at the top to prevent evaporation of container moisture. The substrate can be treated with growth promoting, heating, ion exchange substances etc.
