1350156 Modified epoxy resins REICHHOLD-ALBERT-CHEMIE AG 5 July 1971 [7 July 1970] 31307/71 Heading C3B Modified epoxy resins are prepared by reacting excess amounts of polyepoxides, or mixtures thereof with monoepoxides, with compounds containing -OH or -SH groups. Reaction takes place in the presence of a complex of BF 3 with an amine having a pKb value in aqueous soln. of 15-4À5. The reactants are present so that 0À1-0À9 equivalents of -OH or -SH compounds are used per epoxide equivalent. The products are soluble in organic solvents and may be cured by conventional epoxy resin hardeners. Typical complexes used are of BF 3 with monoethylamine, propylamine, n-butylamine or benzylamine. The epoxy resin may be a polyglycidyl ether of a polyhydric phenol or of a polyhydric alcohol. The -OH or -SH containing material may be a polyhydric alcohol or a copolymer thereof with an olefin oxide, an ester of a hydroxycarboxylic acid with a polyhydric alcohol or a partial glycidyl ether of a polyhydric alcohol; a preferred material is castor oil. Uses.-Electrical insulation, adhesives, castings. |
