摘要 1306795 Moulding structural elements AMERICAN METAL CLIMAX Inc 21 May 1971 [31 July 1970] 16300/71 Heading B5A [Also in Division E1] In a method of and apparatus for making an elongated structural member comprising a pair of spaced apart structural members 24, 26, Fig. 15, secured together by a continuous web 28 of heat insulating material, the members 24, 26 are aligned in horizontal spaced apart relation and a removable backing member 338 in the form of a belt is positioned therebetween; the members and backing member are moved together along parallel horizontal paths and receive, by gravity, a softened heat insulating material which bonds to the members 24, 26. The insulating material is hardened before the backing member is removed. The apparatus shown conveys the members from right to left through alignment stations and heating means. The inlet and outlet ends of the apparatus comprises a pair of spaced apart endless belts 86, 88 adjustable vertically and laterally, each receiving a structural member. Each belt extends between a pair of rollers carried by a framework 98 which is adjustable vertically, whilst maintaining the belt horizontal, by a hand wheel 122. The framework is supported at its ends by pivoted members and the belts are driven by a motor 52 via chain and sprocket drives. When the leading ends of the structural members are located between a photo-electric switching system 170 a pair of pressure rollers 160 are urged downwardly on to each of the members at the inlet end by pneumatic cylinders 152 to urge the members against their belts which are then operated to move the members through a station 176, Fig. 6, comprising replaceable dies 184, 186 with guide apertures through which the sections pass. The sections are guided through an open-ended cylindrical oven 194 with adjustably supported heating lamps spaced therealong and are received by further guiding and alignment dies 184, 186 at a station 190. The temperature of the members is raised in the oven to 300-350‹ F. to provide a bond with the heat insulating material, and in order to hold and guide the members whilst such material is applied they are fed through a series of horizontal alignment stations 210-1, 210-2, 210-3, 210-4 which alternate with vertical alignment stations 212-1, 212-2 et seq. Each horizontal alignment station comprises a pair of rollers 214, 216, Fig. 13, covered with resilient material which engage the members 24, 26 and urge them towards each other and against pairs of rollers 260, 262, Figs. 12, 13. Rollers 214, 216 are mounted on arms 220 pivoted at 222 to engage stops 224 in their innermost positions; the arms 220 are received within U-shaped brackets 246 which are urged towards the members by cables 248 extending over pulleys 254 and having weights at their lower ends. The rollers 260, 262 are mounted on arms 266 spaced above and below the centre line of the members and extending parallel thereto; the arms are mounted on transversely adjustable rods 268 which slide in vertically adjustable sleeves 270. Each vertical alignment station has two vertically movable rollers 282, 284, Fig. 9, which bear down on the members 24, 26, and two laterally and vertically adjustable rollers 310, 312 which engage the undersurfaces of the members. The rollers 282, 284 are carried in forks 292 supported by screws 286 with locknut assemblies 302 and the rollers 310, 312 are supported by axles 314 longitudinally adjustable within vertically adjustable sleeves 316. The backing member 338, which comprises an endless belt extends between a sprocket and chain-driven roll 340 and an idler roll 344 supported on a mounting 354 adjustable longitudinally of the belt by screws 356. The heat insulating material, comprising a plastic in pelletized form, passes from a hopper 328 to an electrically heated and operated flow control valve 332 operated photo-electrically when the members 24, 26 are in position. The belt 338 is cooled by water spray, and excess plastic thereon is removed by wiping pads 366, Fig. 11. (For Figs. 1A, 1B and 11 see next page.)
