A method of combating soil insects or termites comprises applying to soil or to non- textile material a preparation containing a carbamate of formula wherein R 1 and R 2 are H, alkyl or alkenyl; X 1 and X 2 are H, aliphatic, halogen or nitro; and R is in o- or mposition to the carbamyloxy group and with X 3 and X 4 being O or S, and R 3 and R 4 being alkyl, alkenyl, alkinyl or substituted derivatives thereof, or R 3 and R 4 forming, with the whole group R, a heterocyclic group.
