A lipstick or other cosmetic composition (e.g. face powder, rouge, foundation, face cream, theatrical make-up or a lotion) comprises one or more cosmetically acceptable skinstaining oil-insoluble dyes dissolved in a cosmetically-acceptable vehicle, which includes as one of its ingredients at least one dye-solvent compound which is either a derivatvie contain-- ing a single oxypropylene or polyoxypropylene chain, conforming to the general formula: R-Y-(C 3 H 6 O)n H (in which n is an integer from 1 to 30; R is a straight or branched chain aliphatic hydrocarbon group, having from 7 to 19 carbon atoms, and either saturated or containing not more than two double bonds; and -Y- is an -NR'--CH(R')O- or -CO.M- linkage, wherein R' is H or an alkyl or hydroxylsubstituted alkyl group containing from 1 to 6 carbon atoms and -M- is an -O-, -NH-, -O.Z.O- or -NH.Z.O- linkage, where Z is a hydrocarbon chain or a hydroxyl-substituted hydrocarbon chain containing from 1 to 4 carbon atoms) or a derivative containing two or more oxypropylene or polyoxypropylene chains, notionally derived from the derivative containing a single chain by replacement of reactive hydrogen(s) with an oxypropylene or polyoxypropylene chain, provided that the total number of propylene oxide units in the dye-solvent compound does not exceed 30 (compositions described and claimed in U.K. Patent No. 719,300 are disclaimed). The dye-solvent compound may comprise the ,reaction products of mono-iso-propanolamides of mixed fatty acids of groundnut oil with from 3 to 12 molecules of propylene oxide. The cosmetic vehicle may be predominantly composed of oils, fats and/or waxes, and the dye is preferably one or more halogenated fluorescein dyes which may be present in their acid form.
