An anode structure 12, for use in an electrolytic cell 10 having a base 14, sides 15 and a cover 27 for electrolysis of brine solution to produce Cl 2 and NaOH, particularly a flowing mercury cathode cell, comprises an anode face 30 connected to at least one inverted U-shaped conducting bar 31 e. g. of Ti, Zr or alloy thereof in turn connected to at least one lead-in conductor 24 e.g. of Cu, for carrying electric current, e.g. from at least one bus-bar 26, through the cell cover to the conducting bar(s) and the anode face, the arms of the conducting bar(s) being evenly spaced across the anode face and extending from end to end thereof. The or each conductor 24 may be connected to the bar(s) 31 by screw-threaded Ti bosses 32 and secured to one or more anode supports 23, supported via I-beams 20 from members 18 spanning the cell and mounted on adjustable posts 19; a Ti sleeve 37 may protect the or each conductor inside the cell. The anode face 30 is a Ti or Ta open-work base e. g. of foraminous or expanded form, wire screen or mesh or gauze, or punched or slotted sheet, covered with a conducting or semi-conducting electrocatalytic coating: e. g. of (a) a major portion of TiO 2 or Ta 2 O 5 and a minor portion of Pt group metal oxide; or (b) electro- or chemically deposited Pt group metal. The or each conducting bar may have gas escape holes therein and notches along its arms for levelling adjustment of the anode face. The anode structure may be used for other salt solutions or fused salts.
