A dehydrogenation catalyst contains (a) from 40 to 90% by weight of iron, calculated as Fe2O3, (b) from 5 to 40% by weight of potassium, calculated as K2O, (c) from 0.01 to 10% by weight of vanadium, calculated as V2O5, (d) from 0.01 to 20% by weight of tungsten, calculated as WO3, (e) from 0.01 to 30% by weight of a rare earth metal, calculated as the oxide of the highest oxidation stage in each case, (f) from 0.01 to 15% by weight of aluminum, calculated as Al2O3, and (g) up to 10% by weight of cobalt, calculated as CoO. The catalyst is particularly suitable for the dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene to styrene in the presence of steam.
