Electrically heated vehicle mirror - has heating coil bonded to rear of mirror and embedded in filled epoxy resin

The outside rear view mirror of a car is equipped with a heating coil to provide improved vision in wet conditions. The mirror glass (1) has a silvered coating and protective lacquered top cover (2). An aluminium sheet (3) of approximately 0.5 mm thickness is bonded to the mirror to provide good heat transfer. The heating element consists of a form of insulating material e.g. plastics, onto which is wound a resistance heating coil (6). The element is bonded (4) onto the aluminium backing plate. Good external heat insulation is provided by embedding the element in glass fibre filled epoxy resin (7). Power consumption is approximately 5W when operating of a 12V supply.
