Welding machine uses a clamping chuck with moving jaws which clamp a flange during welding. The clamping jaws are connected to a collar which is rotated on its axis through an arc of prescribed angular distance by a toothed rack. The chuck pref. uses three jaws located on pivot bolts at intervals of 120 degrees, each bolt being fitted with a gear wheel mating with gear teeth on the collar; and the pivot bolts are spring loaded so they can move axially. The toothed rack is pref. driven by a hydraulic cylinder to open and close the jaws. One of the jaws is pref. fitted with a feeler indicating when the jaws are in contact with the end of a pipe round which the flange is aligned. The chuck will clamp flanges used on pipes with nominal dia. between 25-250 mm, i.e. it is not necessary to change the chuck even over this very wide range of sizes.
|
