The railway rolling stock holding brake, serving as an additional brake for holding the vehicle in position, has a ratchet wheel seated on a wheel-set shaft, with a locking lever for laying into the ratchet wheel. Between wheel-set shaft (2) and ratchet wheel (3) there is a friction coupling which releases itself after a prescribed degree of turning between them both. This friction coupling is in the form of a ring (5) and can be formed so as to be self-releasing when a prescribed max. temperature is exceeded, and for this purpose it may incorporate a thermostatic switch. An assembly can be fitted to provide for activation of the friction coupling by the relative movement between shaft and ratchet wheel.
