A vertically-adjustable pressure plate (3) is applied to a patient's chest to restrict frontal expansion and encourage lateral expansion. The plate (3) is mounted on a horizontally adjustable bar (5). The bar (5) is mounted on a vertically adjustable pillar (10). The pillar (10) also carries a vertically adjustable rail (8) which is intended to secure the apparatus at the treatment location. The patient lies on a rigid surface, and can adjust the fine vertical positioning of the pressure plate (3) by means of a screw (2) so that a desired pressure is exerted.
