An ignition timing control for an internal combustion engine is performed by measuring operating variables of the internal combustion engine in order to assess the operating states of the internal combustion engine and by determining an optimum ignition point as a function of the measured operating variables. The ignition point thus determined is limited in order to limit the magnitude of the ignition point variation within a certain range, as a result of which a large variation of the ignition point is prevented even if the operating states of the internal combustion engine vary from one state to another. The ignition point can be further limited in order to limit the magnitude of the ignition advance during an initial acceleration state.
