The continuous preparation of electrode material from pitch, coke dust and loose coke material of widely different grain size is carried out initially in a mixing and kneading device (1). This is connected via a drop shaft (7) to a downstream extruder (9). The speed of rotation of the extruder (9) is influenced by a monitoring element (17) in the drop shaft (7). A lateral ejection orifice (10) in the drop shaft (7) is closed by an ejection flap (11) which is under the action of a control element (39) which also influences the extruder drive. The shaping of the prepared electrode mass is separate from the mixing and kneading process, so that there can be no mutual interactions. <IMAGE>
