In a gyroscopically controlled arrangement, for example a horizontally stabilised platform for the target finding and tracking radar of a warship, it is desirable to test the mechanical and electrical accuracy of the total arrangement in accordance with realistic conditions. For this purpose, the ship would have to be moved in a defined manner and a known fixed target would have to be sighted. To test such an arrangement with a ship at rest, the control loops for controlling the arrangement and the gyroscope axes are opened up and defined time-variable test signals are supplied so that the arrangement to be stabilised is now moved in a defined manner compared with the ship, and this movement is recorded. From a number of different test signals and different switching states of the control loops, extensive information can be obtained which partially also indicates probably impending failures. <IMAGE>
