PURPOSE:To improve the positioning accuracy of a head, by providing a driving means which moves a carriage including a transducer in the radius direction of a medium, and an energizing means. CONSTITUTION:A spring 5 is stretched around two gears in a gear train being interposed between the driving means and the driving source of a head carriage 1 so that its length can be always kept at a constant length for the rotation of the gears. Therefore, a deviating force for eliminating play in engagement is set at constant invariably, and the positioning accuracy of the head carriage 1 can be improved. By setting the deviating force for the driving source such as a motor, etc., so as to set its size in almost equal and a rotational direction oppositely, it is possibly to hold the position of the carriage with a comparatively weak power equivalent to the residual torque of a stepping motor 12, etc., even when the stepping motor 12 is not energized. Also, by stretching the spring 5 for eliminating the play in the engagement between a head carriage driving means such as a cam or a lead screw, etc., and the gear having a reference track position detecting means, the play can be effectively removed. In such way, it is possible to remarkably reduce the position error of the head.
