PURPOSE:To efficiently obtain an Fe-Pd shape memory alloy which undergoes no oxidation of Fe and does not crack during working, by heat treating an Fe-Pd alloy having a specified compsn. at a specified temp. in a specified atmosphere. CONSTITUTION:An Fe-Pd alloy contg. 25-35atom% Pd is heat treated at 700-1,000 deg.C in a reducing atmosphere contg. <=30% N2+H2 or in an inert atmosphere of N2, Ar or N2+Ar. By this heat treatment, the oxidation of Fe in the Fe-Pd shape memory alloy and the formation of an Fe-Pd ordered phase are inhibited. Accordingly, the alloy does not crack during subsequent working and can be easily worked. Unlike conventional heat treatment in vacuum this heat treatment does not require a long time so as to increase the degree of vacuum.
