The invention relates to sensors which make it possible to measure the dimensions of an object by touch and, more specifically, those which are equipped with a force generator for assigning to their sensor a stable rest position and for allowing the latter to exert on the object to be measured a bearing force which grows linearly and rapidly according to the displacement of the sensor in a measurement range and which then becomes only slightly increasing in a disengagement range. In a sensor according to the invention, this generator comprises two antagonistic springs (64, 66) which are connected to a part (34) of the suspension device of the sensor (42) and deformable in the direction of displacement of the latter, and an assembly supported by another part (36) of the suspension device, which comprises stop means (82), two movable elements (72, 74) which act in opposite directions on the two springs and reciprocally, and other elastic means (78) which try to maintain permanently these movable elements bearing against the stop means. Moreover, when the sensor is at rest, the two springs are subjected by the movable elements to a pretensioning which is sufficient for these springs both always to be tensioned as long as the displacements of the sensor are situated within the measurement range. The invention finds application in particular in the accurate measurement of the dimensions of pieces to be machined. <IMAGE>
