PURPOSE:To efficiently produce fumaric acid useful as, e.g. a raw material of specialty chemicals by allowing a malate isomerasecontaining microorganism or its treated material to act on an aqueous solution containing a mixture of maleic acid and fumaric acid and isomerizing maleic acid. CONSTITUTION:A microorganism (e.g. Alcaligenes faecalis IFO 12669 strain) containing malate isomerase is inoculated in a culture medium and subjected to shaking culture at 30 deg.C for 24hr. The cultured material is subsequently added to a culture medium in a jar fermenter and cultured at 30 deg.C for 24hr and the resultant culture solution is subjected to centrifugal separation to collect the microorganisms. The collected cell bodies or their treated materials are then added to an aqueous solution containing a mixture of maleic acid and fumaric acid and allowed to act on it at 30 deg.C for 1hr for synthesis of fumaric acid by isomerization of maleic acid. The aqueous solution is made acidic with sulfuric acid, etc., and fumaric acid is collected in the form of crystal, thus efficiently producing the objective fumaric acid which is isomer of maleic acid and useful as, e.g. a raw material of specialty chemicals such as aspartic acid and malic acid in a high yield. |
