The invention relates to a method for coating objects or materials with sugar and a device for implementing the method, the latter being composed of a rotatable container for accommodating the material to be coated, a guiding plate 9 which can be moved independently of the rotatable container, a guiding plate holding shaft 10 with a bent structure for fastening the guiding plate 9 to the shaft and a hydraulic cylinder to permit the reciprocal movement of the guiding plate holding shaft 10 to permit displacement of the guiding plate 9. It also has load cells 17a and 17b for measuring the position of the guiding plate 9 with respect to a heaped-up layer M of the material to be coated, which are arranged on the guiding plate 9. The cells 17a and 17b are used to hold the position of the guiding plate 9 relative to the collected layer M of the material to be coated at any point on the basis of a load which arises as a result of contact with the material to be coated.
