PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently obtain a thin flaky glass having a smooth surface and high transparency by applying a sol contg. an organometallic compd.-base polymer on a metallic substrate, drying and contracting the sol to release a gel and heating the gel at a high temp. SOLUTION: A sol contg. a polymer resulting from an organometallic compd. (e.g. Si methoxide) and having 3,000-1,000,000 mol.wt. is prepared. The sol is then applied on a substrate having <=50nm surface roughness Ra, heat-treated at a high temp. in an oxygen-contg. atmosphere and with the outermost surface made of a metal to form a sol film. The sol film is then dried, contracted and released from the substrate to obtain a flaky gel. The flaky gel is then heated at a high temp. to obtain a flaky glass having 0.1-1μm mean thickness, 5-150 aspect ratio and <=50nm surface roughness Ra and transmitting >=80% of the light of 550nm wavelength. This flake is appropriately used to produce a facing material, etc.
