The bow has a centre-piece (3) joining its two arms which have free ends where the string (4) is secured. A distance piece (5) is provided to the centre-piece, protruding towards the archer. At the free end of the distance-piece a support (10) is arranged at the position corresponding roughly to the maximum amount of deflection of the string. The lengthwise axis of the distance-piece may be parallel to the direction in which the string is deflected. The centre-piece may be provided with a clamp (7), which allows lengthwise adjustment or detachment of the distance-piece.
