PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound having excellent functional characteristics and safety by a simple operation in a high yield, by formulating a specific alcohol with a phenol and an alkyl halide in the presence of a phase transfer catalyst in a two-phase system. SOLUTION: An alcohol or a phenol of formula I [R1 to R6 are each H, OH, phenyl, a group of formula II (R7 is a 0-3C hydrocarbon chain; R8 is a 1-7C hydrocarbon), etc.] is reacted with an alkyl halide of the formula R9 -X (R9 is methyl or ethyl; X is a halogen) in the presence of a phase transfer catalyst (e.g. a sulfonium compound, a phosphonium compound, etc.), in a two phase system to give the objective compound of formula III [R10 to R15 are each H, a 1-4C alkyl, an alkenyl, a group of formula IV (R16 is a 0-3 hydrocarbon chain; R17 is a 1-8C hydrocarbon chain) or the like]. The phase transfer catalyst used in the reaction is separated and recovered and is preferably reused in the reaction. |
