<p>A directional microphone system that utilizes multiple microphone elements (14, 16) combined to produce a monaural signal that substantially represents sound produced by a desired source is disclosed. The invention includes two or more microphone elements (14, 16), a combining element (20) and a cross-over portion (22). The microphone elements (14, 16) receive an acoustic energy composed of sound from a desired source, such as a talker and sound from undesired background noise. The combining element (20) then combines the two signals (28, 30) from the microphones (14, 16) into a combined signal (78). The cross-over portion (22) includes a first filter (24) for filtering the signal of one of the microphone elements, a second filter (26) for filtering the combined signal (78), and a unifying element (82) for combining the filtered signals to produce a monaural signal which has an extended frequency bandwidth response, without the need for expensive, dedicated circuitry or matched microphone elements. In one embodiment, which is used in connection with a computer, the microphone elements are connected to the stereo inputs of the computer.</p> |
