PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the lowering of operating voltage, the lowering of temperature dependency of operating voltage, and the reliability in a liquid crystal medium capable of operating in a liquid crystal display which operates at a temperature at which the medium exhibits a blue phase. SOLUTION: This invention relates to the following: a mesogenic compound represented by the formula I; media containing one or more of these compounds, a mesogenic medium preferably exhibiting a blue phase; the use of them in electrooptical light modulation elements; the use of each of them in their displays; and such devices.
