Disclosed is a metal complex compound with a structure including a metal such as iridium and a monodentate ligand such as a hydrogen atom in addition to a bidentate ligand. Also disclosed is a method for producing such a metal complex compound by using a metal compound having a ligand with two oxygen atoms as a raw material. Further disclosed is an organic electroluminescent device wherein an organic thin film composed of one or more layers including at least a light-emitting layer is interposed between a pair of electrodes. By containing the above-described metal complex compound in at least one layer of the organic thin film, the organic electroluminescent device has high stability, high luminous efficiency and long life.
