PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing apparatus and an image processing method capable of satisfying both requirements of a high response and a high definition display. SOLUTION: The image processing apparatus includes: a step S501 of first applying simple image reproduction processing to an image in a speed priority mode; a step S502 of displaying a reproduction processing image processed in the speed priority mode; a step S503 of starting a second thread; a step S504 of repetitively checking whether or not the reproduction processing in an image quality priority mode is finished on the basis of a background thread, and proceeding to a step S505 after decoding is finished; and the step S505 of using the reproduction processing image processed in the image quality priority mode to update the display; and the method in the second thread includes: a step S506 of terminating a sleep state and starting the processing by receiving an instruction from a main thread; a step S507 of applying complete image reproduction processing to the image in the image quality priority mode; and a step S508 of bringing itself into a sleep state.
