PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an information recording medium where recording members can be heated locally and moreover, the whole recording members can be heated sufficiently. SOLUTION: In the information recording medium 1, the two or more recording members 9 on which information can be recorded by heating are separated from each other by dielectric 7. Between the recording members 9 and the dielectric 7, metallic films 8 are provided. When nearfield light is applied, surface plasmon which occurs on a medium surface is propagated in the vertical direction of the substrate 3 along an interface between the metallic films 8 and the dielectric 7. That is, it is possible to suppress propagation of the surface plasmon in the inplane direction of the substrate 3. Thus, the surface plasmon can be propagated selectively in the depth direction of the recording members 9. Consequently, it is possible to heat the recording members 9 locally, that is to heat only the recording members 9, in a recording layer 5 which is optimal for high-density recording.
