PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical device capable of effectively cooling an optical element, and a projector. SOLUTION: An optical device body 45A includes: a light modulation device 451 functioning as an optical element which optically converts incident luminous flux and emits it; and a heat pipe 458 formed like a tube having capillary structure inside, containing a coolant inside the tube and performing heat transfer by the reflux of the coolant inside the tube, and connected to the optical modulation device 451 to transmit heat on the outer surface so as to cool the optical modulation device 451.
