PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a norbornene-based ring-opened (co)polymer, which has high solubility to organic solvent, in addition to excellent transparency and heat resistance, and further specific birefringence and wavelength dependency. SOLUTION: The polymer comprises a structural unit (I) represented by the general formula (I), wherein X preferably represents -CH<SB>2</SB>CH<SB>2</SB>-, and R<SB>1</SB>-R<SB>5</SB>each represents a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, a 1-30C hydrocarbon group or a polar group, any one of R<SB>2</SB>-R<SB>5</SB>being a singly dehydrogenated product of an aromatic compound having a molar extinction coefficient of 10-100,000 at a maximum absorption wavelength.
