An electrolysis process for preparing an aqueous electro-chemically active cadmium comprises preparing an aqueous electrolyte containing cadmium sulphate and nickel sulphate which has a cadmium concentration of at least 20gm/1, preferably 20-30gm/1, and a ratio of cadmium to nickel of about 10 to 1 and a pH value of from 5 to 8; inserting into the electrolyte a cadmium anode, an activated nickel anode, an inactive gassing anode and a cathode; passing current from the anodes to the cathode at a current density of at least one ampere/sq.in. of cathode for a time corresponding to not more than 0.25 ampere hours per sq. inch of cathode; removing the cadmium active material deposited thereon from the cathode; and washing and drying the cadmium active material in such manner as to prevent its oxidation. During the process nickel is deposited with the cadmium. The pH of the electrolyte may be maintained between 5 and 8 by addition of ammonium sulphate. The cathode current density is preferably between 1 and 2 amps/sq. inch of cathode if electro-deposition is effected without agitation. The inactive gassing anode may be of nickel and should be placed between the cadmium anode and the activated nickel anode. |
