The invention comprises a method of separating optical isomers of amines of the formula NH2CH(R2)CH2R1, in which R1 denotes hydrogen or an alkyl group of 1-8 carbon atoms and R2 denotes a monocyclic aryl group, which may be substituted, or a bicyclic aryl group having six carbon atoms in each ring. The method involves the formation of a Werner complex of nickel thiocyanate with two or four mols. of the amine and the formation of a clathrate from the complex, as described in Specifications 931,775, 935,099, 937,791, 945,012, 994,026 and 994,027. In the method of the invention, an amine of the formula above containing an excess of either the d- or l-isomer is caused to react with a clathrated Werner complex in such proportions and under such conditions that the dl-form of the amine reacts with the nickel thiocyanate and, after formation of a solid clathrate and separation thereof, e.g. by filtration, the excess of d- or l-isomer remains in the liquid phase. The examples describe the treatment of a -phenylethyl amine, a -phenylpropyl amine, a -(m-chlorophenyl) ethyl amine and a -phenylisohexyl amine, a d-isomer being separated in each case.
